Ford Truck Maintenance Schedule (General Guide)

By fordmin | 12:19 AM UTC, Tue March 03, 2026

Keeping up with routine maintenance is the key to getting long life, strong performance, and maximum resale value from your Ford truck. Whether you drive a gas-powered model like the Ford F-150, a heavy-duty Ford F-250, or a larger Ford F-350, this general maintenance schedule will help you stay on track.

Ford Truck Maintenance Schedule (General Guide)

⚠️ Always check your owner’s manual for exact intervals based on engine type (gas vs. Power Stroke diesel), model year, and driving conditions.

Every 5,000–7,500 Miles (or 6 Months)

  • Change engine oil and oil filter
  • Rotate tires
  • Inspect brakes (pads, rotors, calipers)
  • Check fluid levels (coolant, brake fluid, transmission, power steering)
  • Inspect belts and hoses
  • Reset maintenance reminder if equipped

If you tow frequently or drive in extreme heat (like Arizona summers), consider shorter oil change intervals.

Every 15,000–20,000 Miles

  • Replace engine air filter
  • Replace cabin air filter (if equipped)
  • Inspect suspension components
  • Inspect exhaust system
  • Check battery and clean terminals

Dusty or off-road conditions may require more frequent air filter replacement.

Every 30,000 Miles

  • Inspect and possibly replace fuel filter (especially diesel models)
  • Inspect transfer case fluid (4WD models)
  • Inspect front and rear differential fluid
  • Check alignment

Heavy-duty trucks used for towing may require more frequent differential service.

Every 60,000 Miles

  • Replace spark plugs (gas engines may vary)
  • Replace transmission fluid and filter (if serviceable)
  • Replace transfer case fluid
  • Flush brake fluid (recommended)

For diesel trucks, fuel filter replacement is often required sooner and more frequently.

Every 100,000 Miles

  • Replace coolant (engine antifreeze)
  • Replace serpentine belt
  • Inspect water pump
  • Inspect timing components (if applicable)

Modern Ford trucks often use long-life coolant, but replacement is still required around this mileage.

Severe Duty Maintenance (Towing / Heavy Use)

If your truck regularly:

  • Tows trailers
  • Carries heavy payloads
  • Operates in extreme heat or cold
  • Drives off-road
  • Idles for extended periods

Then follow the “Severe Duty” schedule in your manual. This typically means:

  • Shorter oil change intervals
  • More frequent transmission and differential fluid service
  • Earlier brake replacement

Diesel vs. Gas Maintenance Differences

Diesel (Power Stroke) models:

  • More frequent fuel filter changes
  • DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) system monitoring
  • Higher oil capacity and cost
  • Turbo system inspections

Gas models:

  • Spark plug replacement required
  • Throttle body cleaning may be needed over time

Why Following the Schedule Matters

Sticking to a maintenance schedule:

  • Extends engine and transmission life
  • Maintains fuel efficiency
  • Prevents expensive repairs
  • Protects warranty coverage
  • Improves resale value

Ford trucks are built to last, but even the toughest Super Duty models need routine service to stay reliable.
