How to Install a Ford F-250, F-350 or F-450 Tailgate Assist Shock Kit (2017–2024)

By fordmin | 9:29 PM UTC, Tue October 27, 2026

Installing a tailgate assist shock on a 2017–2024 Ford F-250, F-350 or F-450 Super Duty helps the tailgate lower slowly instead of dropping suddenly. Most kits use the factory mounting points, so drilling is not normally required. The following guide covers the common installation procedure for a driver-side kit such as the TruckTok TA-F-0002. Always follow the instructions supplied with your specific kit.

Tail Gate Assist Kit

Tools Required

  • 10 mm wrench
  • T50 Torx socket or wrench
  • Allen key or supplied installation tool
  • Protective film, if supplied with the kit

Installation Instructions

Step 1: Open the tailgate

Park the truck on level ground, place it in Park, apply the parking brake and lower the tailgate carefully. Keep fingers clear of the hinges and mounting points. Support the tailgate securely if needed.

Step 2: Loosen the tailgate mounting bolts

On the driver's side, locate the two bolts near the tailgate pivot. Use a 10 mm wrench to remove the upper bolt and loosen the lower bolt without removing it completely.

Step 3: Install the lower mounting bracket

Slide the slotted mounting plate between the tailgate and the washer on the loosened lower bolt. Insert the supplied round-head bolt through the mounting plate and secure it according to the kit instructions.

Step 4: Attach the tailgate cable

Remove the driver's-side tailgate cable from its mounting bolt. Use a T50 Torx tool or the supplied wrench if required. Position the cable and mounting bracket as directed by the kit manufacturer, then reinstall and securely fasten the cable bolt. Do not operate the tailgate with the support cable disconnected.

Step 5: Apply protective film

If your kit includes protective polyester film, apply it to the specified areas of the truck bed and tailgate. This helps prevent contact between the assist components and the painted surfaces as the tailgate moves.

Step 6: Fit the assist shock

Attach the thicker end of the shock to the upper ball-joint mount and the thinner end to the rear bumper-side mount, as specified in the kit instructions. Press each socket fully onto its ball stud and check that both ends are securely seated.

Step 7: Check the installation

Inspect the mounting bolts, tailgate cable and shock connections. Slowly raise and lower the tailgate while keeping clear of moving parts. Confirm that it lowers smoothly, closes and latches normally, and that the shock does not bind or rub against the truck.

Important Notes

  • These instructions describe a common driver-side installation; bracket designs and hardware can vary between kits.
  • Check that your kit specifically lists your truck's model year and tailgate configuration.
  • The shock controls the tailgate's descent; it does not automatically open or close the tailgate.
  • Recheck the mounting hardware periodically, following the kit manufacturer's recommendations.
